Democrats in Nebraska say Gov. Dave Heineman (R) and state lawmakers need to address the sale of liquor in the town of Whiteclay.
Democrats, including Winnebago tribal member Frank LaMere, want the state to study issues related to Whiteclay, such as liquor law violations and law enforcement. Heineman, who is seeking re-election, doesn't support that idea but says he is committed to action, a spokesperson said.
Four liquor establishments in Whiteclay sell more than 4 million cans of beer a year, mostly to residents of the nearby Pine Ridge Reservation. Native and non-Native activists say the state doesn't do enough to ensure the law is being enforced there.
The state wants the Oglala Sioux Tribe to start patrolling the town to beef up the law enforcement presence.
