In an editorial today, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader praises the Nebraska Legislature for agreeing to study liquor sales near the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The study was authorized after a bill to establish a five-mile no liquor buffer zone was dropped by lawmakers. Data on liquor sales, facilities and the effects of alcohol will be looked at.

The paper urges the Legislature to look seriously at drinking and take action against to curb high alcoholism, crime, unemployment and other social ills on the Nebraska-South Dakota border. "They must use this study as the basis for action," the paper writes.
