Native and non-Native activists plan to erect a blockade on the Pine Ridge Reservation in hopes of stopping the sale of liquor in the border town of Whiteclay, Nebraska.
Pine Ridge is dry but some residents go to Whiteclay to buy beer. Four stores in the town sell an estimated 12,000 cans every day to people from the reservation.
The activists hope the blockade will stop the sale of liquor and force the stores to shut down. But they are unsure whether they will have to be deputized by the Oglala Sioux Tribe and whether they can confiscate beer.
Alex White Plume, the vice president of the tribe, said he supports the blockade and will seek the support of other tribal leaders.
