The Nebraska Liquor Control Commission is considering asking for more law enforcement in the town of Whiteclay.

The commission is drafting its annual letter to state lawmakers. In it, they are proposing more money to patrol the town where 427,000 gallons of beer are sold every year, mostly to residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation just across the border in South Dakota.

Tribal leaders and other activists say the four liquor stores in the town regularly violate liquor laws. The licenses of one establishment was suspended recently.

A bill was introduced to allow police from the Oglala Sioux Tribe to patrol the town. Whiteclay was at one point considered part of the reservation.
