Whiteclay liquor license denied

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2001 The Nebraska Liquor Control Commission on Thursday denied a replacement liquor license to a beer establishment in Whiteclay. Whiteclay is located near the South Dakota border. The beer establishments there largely cater to an Indian clientele from the Pine Ridge Reservation. The license in question was denied because its operators were found to have previous liquor law violations. The license was sought for a beer establishment whose owner is retiring. In related Whiteclay news, a South Dakota judge sanctioned former Senator Jim Abourezk for showing "bad faith" in his pursuit of Gov. Bill Janklow. Abourezk tried to subpoena Janklow to testify in a case related to the death of a 14-year-old at a state boot camp and was fined $350 by a circuit court judge. Abourezk has been trying to get the area around Whiteclay recognized under the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty as Indian Country so that liquor sales can be prohibited. Abourezk says he will appeal the sanction to the state Supreme Court. Get the Story:
