Meskwaki faction protests at tribal school
Thursday, August 14, 2003

Supporters of the unrecognized council of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa protested at the tribal school on Wednesday.

According to KCRG-TV, the protesters were not violent but caused enough of disturbance that school administrator Joel Longie closed the school for the day. Classes weren't in session -- teachers were there in preparation for the first day of school next week.

The protesters, supporters of Homer Bear Jr., the leader of the unrecognized council, are upset Longie worked with Alex Walker Jr., the leader of the recognized council.
