Elections put GOP in control of Congress
American Indian voters showed their strength during this year's election by turning out at the polls in record numbers.

Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) was narrowly re-elected thanks to the votes of Sioux tribal members on reservations throughout the state. The win was the product of an intense effort by the Democrats.

Candidates in Oklahoma, including two tribal members, also owed support to Indian voters, tribal leaders pointed out. And in Montana, a record seven Native Americans are in the state legislature.

The turnout couldn't counteract a national trend that put the Republican Party in control of both chambers of Congress. The GOPs added some seats in the House and were able to recapture the Senate from the Democrats after nearly two years out of power.
