Okla. tribal members win races
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2002

Two members of Oklahoma tribe's are headed to Congress.

Rep. Brad Carson (D), a member of the Cherokee Nation, was re-elected for the 2nd District. The district contains one of the largest percentage of Native American voters in the country.

First elected in 2000, Carson has displayed his tribal membership throughout his first term in Congress. He sits on the House Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over Indian issues.

For Tom Cole, his Republican credentials were more important than his membership in the Chickasaw Nation. He captured the 4th district, a seat vacated by close friend J.C. Watts (R).

Elsewhere in Oklahoma politics, Sen. Ernest Istook (R) and Sen. Jim Inhofe (R) were re-elected. Inhofe recently prevented passage of a land reform bill supported by the Five Civilized Tribes of eastern Oklahoma.
