Sen. Clinton courts Indian vote in South Dakota
Wednesday, May 21, 2008

With the Democratic primary campaign down to its final races, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New York) is courting the Indian vote in South Dakota.

Clinton, who is planning another visit to the state this Friday, said the Bush administration has neglected Indian Country. In a conference call yesterday with a Lakota supporter, she vowed to improve the Indian Health Service, increase funding for tribal colleges and invite tribes to the White House.

South Dakota's primary takes place on June 3, along with Montana's. They are the last of the primary season.

Both states have a significant percentage of Native Americans, who overwhelmingly vote Democratic in national elections.
