Canada set to apologize to Native school students
Tuesday, April 29, 2008

The Canadian government plans to issue a formal apology to former students of Native residential schools.

The government sent 150,000 Native children to boarding schools across the country. Many were subject to sexual, physical and emotional abuse.

About 90,000 survivors remain. They are a part of a $2 billion settlement from the government, a process that includes a formal apology and a national Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Justice Harry LaForme, a member of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation in Ontario, has been named to chair the commission.
