Canada says $1.9B abuse payout won't be held up

Canada's Indian Affairs Minister said the $1.9 billion residential abuse settlement won't be held up over a dispute in attorney's fees.

Minister Jim Prentice said the package will receive final approval in a few weeks despite an appeal filed by the government and a law firm over the disputed fees. His comments contradict those made by a government official about the case.

Under the settlement, every former student receives $10,000, plus $3,000 for each year spent in school. Additional money can be sought for those with documentable abuse claims. Elders are entitled to rush payments.
