Canada to apologize to Native residential students

The Canadian government is preparing to apologize to former students of Native residential schools.

The apology is part of a $2 billion settlement to former students. No time frame has been given for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to make the apology.

Some Native leaders in Manitoba, however, are tired of waiting. So they are asking Queen Elizabeth to apologize on behalf of Canada.

"The Queen is our last resort. We have a special relationship with the Queen — that's what triggered the letter," Sydney Garrioch, the grand chief of the Manitoba Keewatinook Ininew Okimowin, which represents 30 First Nations in northern Manitoba, told CBC News.
