Some California tribal leaders are worried about a backlash as they battle a voter initiative that would expand non-Indian gaming.

Tribes are debating their strategy against the initiative. At least six tribes have already decided to spend at least $9 million to defeat it.

But some worry that flaunting so much money could backfire on them. In the state's recent recall race, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) criticized rivals for accepting tribal donations and said tribes have "bought" politicians and lawmakers.
