Neil Volz, a former associate of convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff and a former aide to imprisoned ex-Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio), is being sentenced today for his role in the scandal.
Federal prosecutors say Volz deserves leniency for cooperating with the investigation. He helped secure Ney's guilty plea, they say.
Volz was Ney's chief of staff when Abramoff represented the Tigua Tribe of Texas. Ney promised to insert language into an election reform bill that would help the tribe reopen its casino, which had been shut down by the state.
In related news, aides to Rep. John Doolittle (R-California) who testified before a grand jury last week were accompanied by a lawyers for the House of Representatives. Doolittle is under scrutiny for his ties to Abramoff, whom he once defended despite his personal opposition to gambling.
