Abramoff associate seeks leniency for cooperating

Neil Volz, a former associate of convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, is seeking leniency as he is about to be sentenced for his role in the scandal.

Volz says he should be given home detention because he cooperated with federal prosecutors. He turned over e-mails, voice mails, photos and other incriminating information used against former Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio), who pleaded guilty and is serving time in prison.

Volz was Ney's chief of staff before he went to work for Abramoff. He testified in the trial of David Safavian, a former White House official who was found guilty for his role in the scandal.

Volz is due to be sentenced September 12.
