First Nations call for day of protest on June 29

The Assembly of First Nations has called for a national day of peaceful protests on June 29.

AFN held a special meeting this week to discuss the "crisis" facing Native people. They agreed to hold marches in cities across Canada to call attention to issues on reserves.

Chief Terry Nelson of the Roseau River First Nation in Manitoba said the protest should go further. He advocated for blockades of rail lines, a tactic that some Native activists have already taken.

But some, like leaders from the Yukon, objected to that idea and others won't participate in the day at all. Cree Grand Chief Matthew Mukash said the Grand Council of the Crees won't be taking part.
