WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2001 Indian Affairs Minister Robert Nault and Assembly of First Nations Chief Matthew Coon Come on Monday agreed to halt consultations on changes to the federal Indian Act for 30 days. The government is proposing changes to the 125-year-old act. But First Nations leaders are resisting, saying the government wants to take away their sovereignty. As a result, many have already boycotted or refused to attend consultation meetings. Threats of civil disobedience were also made but Coon Come said leaders will not follow through for now.
