The Canadian government approved a $1.9 billion settlement for survivors of Native residential schools.
The deal still must be approved in the courts. But Native leaders say they welcome the payments being made to students who suffered sexual, physical and emotional abuse at government-sponsored schools.
Elders over the age of 65 as of May 30, 2005, are eligible for an immediate $8,000 payment. Descendants of those who died after that date can also apply for compensation, CBC News reported.
All students are eligible for a lump sum of $10,000, plus $3,000 for each year spent in school.
