Canada's PM chooses new Indian affairs minister

Andy Mitchell has been named Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development by new Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Mitchell is a member of parliament from Ontario. He is a banker who places a priority on economic development, particularly in rural Canada. He said he would work to raise the standard of living for Aboriginals.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs praised Mitchell's appointment.
