Leaders of First Nations in Canada are upset that the $5 billion deal they secured with prior administration has been discarded in the latest budget.
First Nations met with former prime minister Paul Martin last fall to ensure more funding for health care, housing, infrastructure and other needs. But the new Conservative killed the agreement and has promising only $450 million to help Native reserves.
Tribal leaders are angry at the lack of commitment. They predicted more potentially hostile situations, such as the current protest in Caledonia, Ontario, unless the government lives up to its promises.
