No patrols at Whiteclay two years after agreement

The Oglala Sioux Tribe will lose out on $200,000 in federal funds because it hasn't started patrols in the border town of Whiteclay, Nebraska.

Two years ago, the tribe and the state of Nebraska signed an agreement to cross-deputize tribal officers and allow them to enforce state law in Whiteclay. The town is home to five stores that sell millions of cans of beer to reservation residents.

But the tribe and the state haven't done anything to implement the agreement. The state points to the tribe's inaction while tribal officers and some tribal members are said to resist the arrangement.

The tribe will lose $100,000 by the end of the month and the remaining $100,000 as early as October if the patrols don't start. “Nothing happened, and nothing will happen,” Mark Vasina of Nebraskans for Peace told the Associated Press. Working with Lakota activists, the group has raised awareness about alcohol sales in Whiteclay.
