The majority of Inupiat Eskimos have supported development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge but not every Inupiat welcomes the idea of drilling in their backyard.
Some Inupiats who fear damage to the environment spoke out against drilling at a meeting in Kaktovic, an Eskimo village located within ANWR. They also protested Interior Secretary Gale Norton, Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman and members of Congress who made a trip to ANWR over the weekend.
Inupiat Eskimos stand to benefit from jobs and revenues if drilling is allowed. The Kaktovic village corporation owns land within the refuge and Arctic Slope Regional Corp., an Inupiat Eskimo corporation, owns subsurface rights.
