Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

Native America Honoring
Congratulations are due to Native America Calling host and proud father Harlan McKosato for being recently inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa chapter of his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma.

"I flew back to Oklahoma, returned to the campus that nurtured my journalistic skills, and was deeply moved by the respect and genuine admiration I receive from a school that I honestly thought was simply relieved to see me get my degree and leave in 1988," McKosato said of the honor. "And now, I'm a bona fide Doctor of Thinkology."

Does this mean we have to call him Dr. McKosato now?

Comings and Goings
Welcome a new member to the majority staff of the House Resources Committee, chairman Jim Hansen (R-Utah) says.

Jack Belcher, a consultant for the energy industry, has joined the ranks to work as director of the Energy and Mineral Resources subcommittee. He'll be working on legislative issues affecting the development of the nation's natural resources.

Belcher replaces Bill Condit, who is going back to New Mexico to take a consulting job, the committee said.

Yo Quiero Bush
Hispanics love President George W. Bush, according to a new poll the Wall Street Journal promotes today.

Well not all Hispanics. Just 800. Well, not actually that much either, it turns out.

Of 800 Hispanics contacted this month, 44 percent of them favored Bush in a matchup against Al Gore. But barely 46 percent favored the former vice president, down from 62 percent in an exit poll conducted during the contested 2000 election.

So this has Democrats worried, the paper reports. "The poll tells us, 'Wake up! You're being challenged," the Rep. Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey who is of Cuban ancestry.

And just how Native Americans love Bush? Based on available data, 0. Neither party has seen fit to poll American Indians and Alaska Natives.

We're probably too busy protesting mascots, genetic modification and President Bush's policies to make a difference anyway.
