In The Hoop
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Tribal Leaders - For always keeping trust reform a top priority. But how many task forces, pre-meetings, post-meetings and meetings-within-meetings do we need? We're exhausted trying to keep up with you guys and gals.

National Indian Gaming Commission Chairman Montie Deer - You're independent, no matter what Auntie Gale says, and you need your email! And how else would your staff read In The Hoop? Bureau of Indian Affairs employees are jealous.

EDS Corporation - The government keeps paying you and you keep making reports which the Department of Interior can't seem to give to tribal leaders and the public on time. What a perfect setup.

The Winnebago Tribe - For inspiring others to achieve their dreams of sovereignty Mouse pads for everyone!

The Losers
Secretary of Interior Gale Norton - Why not just give Congress the passwords to the IIM trust system? And who cares about court orders. They're meant to be broken.

The National Park Service - Two words: Dom Nessi.

Former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover - You hired him, you promoted him, you love him. But will you testify in support of him?

The State of New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator - Your ignorance is shameful.

In The Middle
Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb - Are you for termination or against? Are you for more state input or against? You move too fast to tell. But at least your hip is doing better.

The Tigua Tribe - Four more days! Four more days!

The GAO - The lawsuit is just what you needed to get your name out there. But now people might find out you're kind of iffy, sometimes.

Native Voters - With so many challenges and disputes, it almost seems as if people think you're important. But they're probably just using you as an excuse to further their own political goals.
