Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

Kiowa Makes Shocking Admission
You may know her as the Indian movie insider, radio hostess, political activist and frequent Native America Calling caller (her comments about Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) playing up to the "caucasians" were one of the show's best moments) but you might not know Kiowa Scout's biggest secret.

Oklahoma's #1 Rebel is part Cherokee. Yes, you read that right!

She acknowledged that part of her ancestry (her father is 1/4 Cherokee) in a post yesterday on the Indianz.Com message board. But if you think the admission means she was one of those 700,000 who identified that particular heritage on the Census 2000, think again!

The Kiowa Scout said she remains a Kiowa from head to toe. "You know, you couldn't PAY me to switch my enrollment to Cherokee," she wrote. HELL NO!! I'll stay a wild Kiowa and proud to be poor."

Go Whities!
Speaking of Native America Calling, the aforementioned called up yesterday to say she supported the students at University of Colorado who started the Fighting Whites team.

Less enthusiastic was a man from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Identifying himself as a Bureau of Indian Affairs employee (we don't even want to know if he was calling on the government's dime but we wouldn't be surprised, although it is a toll-free call), he said all the fuss and muss over Indian mascots was a waste of time.

"I don't see it being racist at all," said Raymond. "I think a lot of our Native people are being a little oversensitive about this issue."

And in case you thought he was alone, he did his own water-cooler survey of fellow employees. "Informal polling among the people here shows that the majority of people are in favor of the Washington Redskins or the Chicago Blackhawks or the Florida State Seminoles or whoever it is," he announced.

Go Lawsuit!
Suzan Harjo, a longtime mascot opponent and one of the plaintiffs whose lawsuit successfully struck down trademarks for the Redskins, wasn't convinced. Like many others, she discounted a recent Sports Illustrated poll which claimed a majority of Native Americans oppose mascots.

So did from Lucinda from Pawnee, Oklahoma. "Are they sure that they surveyed Indians?" she wondered. "Or did they just survey people that just said they were Indians."

"I'd like to see those peoples' CDIBs," he said, referring to the Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood many Native Americans possess.

Just don't count on Raymond to verify them for you!
