WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2003 The Senate voted 51 to 42, largely along party lines, to confirm attorney Jeffrey Sutton to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Sutton was opposed by Democrats who questioned his views on civil rights and the disabled. He wrote a brief for the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) in the Navajo Nation's Supreme Court case. The D.C. Circuit recently heard the Navajo Nation's case against Peabody Energy. The court also hears many Indian law-related disputes, including the Cobell Indian trust fund case. Separately, Senate Democrats said they would block the nomination of Texas state judge to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, citing overly friendly views to businesses. The 5th Circuit hears cases affecting tribes in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi and shut down casinos owned by the Tigua Tribe and the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe, both of Texas. Get the Story:
