Senate panel sets hearings for Bush judges THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 2003 The Senate Judiciary Committee is moving forward the nomination of some of President Bush's appointees to the federal bench. The panel, which is now under Republican control, schedule a vote Friday for Miguel Estrada, who is nominated for the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Hearings are scheduled next Wednesday for John Roberts, for the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and Deborah Cook and Jeffrey Sutton, both for the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. Roberts was among the first group of nominees Bush made in spring 2001. He represented the state of Alaska in the historic Venetie Supreme Court case, which ruled against the existence of Indian Country in that state. He defended the state of Hawaii's trust programs for Native Hawaiians but lost.
