The Senate on Wednesday began debate on one of President Bush's controversial judicial nominees.

Miguel Estrada, an attorney who helped Bush on his presidential election lawsuit, would be the first Hispanic on an appeals court if confirmed to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Democrats question whether he has been up front about his views and are considering a filibuster.

Estrada was advanced by the Senate Judiciary Committee last week by a straight party-line vote.
