Lawsuits challenging Native Hawaiians benefits resume
Wednesday, November 12, 2003
Three federal court cases challenging programs benefiting Native Hawaiians are being heard this month.
One case, Arakaki vs. State of Hawaii, contests the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. Non-Native plaintiffs say the state agencies violate the U.S. Constitution because they are based on race.
Two other cases, Doe vs. Kamehameha Schools and Mohica-Cummings vs. Kamehameha Schools, challenge the Native-only admission policy at the
Kamehameha Schools.
Native Hawaiians are staging three days of marches and rallies to coincide with the cases. Organizers expect up to 20,000 to attend.
