Native Hawaiians press sovereignty
MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2002 Native Hawaiians are launching a education initiative to promote Native Hawaiian sovereignty. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs, a state agency, is taking the lead on the project. The office hopes to educate Native Hawaiians about the options available for a government-to-government relationship with the United States. The Departments of Interior and Justice, during the Clinton administration, recommended the recognition of a Native Hawaiian government. A bill is pending in Congress to establish a relationship.
