Native Hawaiian lawsuit dismissed
FRIDAY, JULY 13, 2001 Without ruling on the case's merits, a federal judge in Hawaii on Thursday dimissed a lawsuit challenging programs that benefit Native Hawaiians. US District Judge David Ezra dismissed the lawsuit because the man who filed it had not actually applied for any of the programs administered by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Ever since the state lost the Rice v. Cayetano lawsuit, various lawsuits have been filed challenging Native Hawaiian programs. As a result, OHA board positions are now open to non-Natives and Native Hawaiians fear loss of homelands and other benefits if other lawsuits succeed. A bill to recognize a government-to-government relationship with Native Hawaiians has been introduced in Congress. Get the Story:
