Judge to rule in Native Hawaiian school case
Wednesday, August 20, 2003
A federal judge is expected to decide whether to force a Native Hawaiian school to accept a non-Native student.
Brayden Mohica-Cummings, 13, wants to attend Kamehameha Schools.
He was initially allowed admission but was turned away when the school discovered he was not Native Hawaiian.
Mohica-Cummings' adoptive grandfather is Native and his mother claims her son is a true Native Hawaiian.
U.S. District Judge David Ezra is expected to rule as classes are starting this
week.
Other judges have struck down Native-only programs in the state, citing a 2000 decision from the Supreme Court.
Native Hawaiians are seeking federal recognition to overcome the decision.
