Goodbye Neal McCaleb
After 17 months of federal service, Neal McCaleb left Washington, D.C., this week to spend his final days as head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the field.

But before he left, the outgoing assistant secretary shared some of his thoughts with tribal leaders. He told tribes to brag about their successes in Indian gaming, he praised a BIA early education program and he said he'd be back before anyone would notice he was away.

Incidents bring racism to surface
They both made racially offensive statements, they both waited days to apologize and they both suffered the consequences as a result. In the United States, Trent Lott (R-Mississippi) was forced out as Senate majority leader while in Canada, David Ahenakew bowed out of several Native leadership positions.

But the similarities don't end there. Lott's suggestion that segregation was good for the country and Ahenakew's Hitler gaffe showed that racism and prejudice have never gone away.
