Lott confident of leadership position

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2002

Senator Trent Lott (R-Mississippi) on Wednesday said he was confident he would survive an early January vote on his position as majority leader.

Only Republican Senators get to vote on January 6. Seven have publicly said they would keep Lott while Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), the only American Indian in the chamber, said he didn't believe Lott is racist.

Also yesterday, Lott complained that the White House is working behind the scenes to get rid of him. President Bush has rebuked him, Secretary of State Colin Powell criticized him and other conservatives say the controversy is hurting Bush's agenda.

African-American conservatives specifically say Lott has set back the Republican Party's efforts to reach out to minorities.
