"Fifty years ago, hardly anyone on the UND campus knew anything about Bill LeCaine, let alone much about his life, dreams and hopes.
How he evolved from that to being an important spokesman for the school in its battle to retain the Fighting Sioux nickname is as much a product of his heritage as it is his rise from absolute poverty, taken from his family and placed in an orphanage in Saskatchewan at a young age.
Bill LeCaine, you see, is 100 percent of Lakota Sioux ancestry, and proud of it. He is a direct descent of Black Moon, who fought alongside Sitting Bull and served as a mentor to him.
He’s also believed to be the first true Sioux to play hockey for the Fighting Sioux. He did that in 1958-59, a member of the freshman team at UND at a time when NCAA rules did not permit freshmen to play on varsity teams."
