Spirit Lake Nation weighs vote on 'Sioux' nickname

The Spirit Lake Nation is considering a vote on the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

The tribe has a resolution on the record that neither supports nor opposes the name. A vote will finally put the issue to rest, Chairwoman Myra Pearson said.

UND has agreed to give up "Sioux" within three years unless the Spirit Lake Nation and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe support the name. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has already passed a resolution against the name.
