Canada wants abuse victim to return settlement

The Canadian government is trying to force a Native woman to return a settlement she was awarded for being a survivor of residential school abuse.

The government says Flora Merrick of the Long Plain First Nation in Manitoba doesn't deserve a mere $1,500 because the abuse she suffered was her own fault. She ran away from school to attend her mother's funeral, and when she was caught, she was beaten with a strap.

The government says the school did nothing wrong by punishing Merrick.
