Rep. Pombo defeated in eighth bid for Congress
Wednesday, November 8, 2006

Rep. Richard Pombo (R-California), the chairman of the House Resources Committee, lost his bid for an eighth term in Congress.

Pombo was defeated by Democrat Jerry McNerney. With nearly all of the vote counted, Pombo had 47 percent to McNerney's 53 percent.

Pombo has been considered a friend to tribes and individual Indians. But his association with Jack Abramoff, the oil and gas industry and the Republican Party spelled death for him at the polls.

With Democrats in control of the House, the top Democrat on Resources is now Rep. Nick Rahall (D-West Virginia), another tribal advocate.
