After years of waiting, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is finally seeing action on its federal recognition petition. Tribal leaders say it is due to their increased presence in Washington.

Tribal leaders hired Jack Abramoff and the Greenberg Traurig firm to press their case. They started to make political donations -- all of them to Rep. Richard Pombo (R-California), the powerful chairman of the House Resources Committee who held hearings and introduced a bill favorable to the tribe.

Some tribal members, however, say the tribe shouldn't have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars just to be heard. They say tribal leaders aren't keeping them informed about their dealings in Washington.
