Nev. court hears dispute over kitty litter plant

A judge in Nevada held a four-hour hearing on Wednesday over a proposed kitty litter plant near the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony.

The Reno-Sparks Tribe, local residents and Washoe County officials oppose the facility. Oil-Dri Corp. is proposing to mine for clay seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

The company filed suit in federal and state court to seek approval for the mine but the federal suit was dismissed. The Bush administration sided with Oil-Dri in federal court, but did not intervene as a party in the case. The tribe had urged the Department of Interior not to get involved.
