The Washoe County Commission has decided to delay by one month a decision on a controversial kitty litter mine.

The commission voted 4-1 on Tuesday to wait and gather more information about the project. Oil-Dri Corp. is proposing to operate a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week clay mine and kitty litter plant on land next to the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony.

Citing health and environmental concerns, tribal members and local residents oppose the project and have protested at every occasion. This has surprised the company, which says it has never seen objection to its operations.
