TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2001

The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony of Nevada and an environmental group are challenging a permit the state approved for a kitty litter mine on land next to tribal land.

The tribe and environmentalists fear dust from the mine would cause health problems. Chicago-based Oil-Dri plans on mining nearly seven million tons of clay and using it to make kitty litter 24-hours a day.
