Gaming mitigation funds are slowly drying up in California, The Santa Maria Sun reports.
According to the California Department of Finance, gaming mitigation funds were $30 million in 2010. The amount dropped to $9.2 million for 2011 and 2012, the paper reported.
The drop is attributed to a series of Class III compacts that were negotiated by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R). Instead of putting money into the Indian Gaming Revenue Sharing Trust Fund, Schwarzenegger required tribes to put money into the state's general fund.
As a result, the Indian Gaming Revenue Sharing Trust Fund is expected to run out of money in a couple of years.
The situation, however, may change as Gov. Jerry Brown (D) negotiates new agreements.
