Former Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Illinois), who opposed clemency for imprisoned American Indian Movement activist Leonard Peltier, died on Thursday. He was 83.
Hyde was chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. He used his position to speak out against Peltier's attempts to gain freedom for the 1975 murders of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
Hyde was also known for leading the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton and for his opposition to abortion.
