The FBI can withhold some documents related to imprisoned American Indian Movement activist Leonard Peltier, a federal judge ruled.

Peltier filed a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain the documents. After the FBI refused to turn all of them over, his attorneys went to court.

U.S. District Judge William Skretny expressed frustration with the FBI's handling of the FOIA request. But he reviewed some of the documents in private and determined they could be held back, the Associated Press reported.

Peltier is serving two life sentences for the murders of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota in July 1975. He has been in prison for 30 years.
