New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's Indian affairs adviser is holding meetings today to discuss the Cayuga Nation's land claim settlement.
The tribe has agreed to limit its land-into-trust applications to 10,000 acres in Cayuga and Seneca counties.
But the tribe has also offered to withdraw all of its applications if the counties win a court challenge.
So far, the counties have not completely rejected the deal although officials have raised concerns about the tribe asserting sovereignty on its ancestral reservation. They do not appear to be worried that the tribe would be able to build a casino elsewhere in the state.
The Cayuga Nation and the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma filed a 64,000-acre land claim. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals threw out the case, saying the tribes waited too long to sue.
The proposed settlement blocks the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe from returning to New York.
