Two New York counties face a July 31 deadline on the Cayuga Nation's land claim settlement.
Cayuga and Seneca counties are meeting to formulate their response to the deal. The goal is to speak with one voice, said the chair of Seneca County's Native American Affairs Committee.
The tribe has agreed to limit its land-into-trust applications to 10,000 acres in both counties. The tribe has claimed up to 64,000 acres.
Some county leaders have expressed opposition to the agreement. The tribe's land claim was thrown out of court because it was filed too late.
The deal excludes the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma, the other plaintiff in the lawsuit.
