Officials in central New York plan to meet with the Bureau of Indian Affairs next week to discuss their opposition to the Cayuga Nation's land-into-trust application.

The tribe is seeking to place 125 acres in trust. The land is located within the original 64,000-acre Cayuga Reservation that was the subject of a now-dismissed land claim.

The tribe filed the application after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that another New York tribe, the Oneida Nation, had to go through the land-into-trust process for properties within its ancestral reservation. The Oneidas want more than 17,000 acres in trust.

Officials from Cayuga and Seneca counties will tell the BIA not to approve the Cayuga application. Their meeting was arranged by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-New York).
