Seneca-Cayuga Tribe opposes land claim settlement

The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma is urging two counties to reject a land claim settlement with the Cayuga Nation.

Chief Paul Spicer told Cayuga and Seneca counties that the deal will have trouble winning federal approval. It prevents his tribe from acquiring land in trust in New York or asserting sovereignty there.

The Cayuga Nation agreed to limit its land-into-trust applications to 10,000 acres in the two counties in promise for a casino elsewhere in the state. Local leaders and residents are opposing the deal.
