Opposition voiced to Cayuga land settlement

Opponents outnumbered supporters at a public hearing on a proposal to settle the Cayuga land claim in New York.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) and the Cayuga Nation announced the deal last month. It calls for the tribe to receive no more than 10,000 acres in trust and for a casino somewhere in the state.

Opponents said there was no way to enforce the deal. They want guarantees that the state will collect taxes from Indian businesses on trust land.

The only person who spoke in favor of the deal was Auburn Mayor Timothy Lattimore. He has welcomed the idea of a casino, which he said will generate jobs

The settlement locks the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma out of New York.
